Some outdoor spaces impress you immediately. Others make you want to stay. In Andrea’s Rancho Palos Verdes backyard, the appeal is quieter. Surrounded by lush planting, soft filtered light and comfortable places to settle in, this intimate patio feels removed from the world beyond it. At the center of the space are Sun Breeze Blocks by Trina Turk for Tesselle, bringing pattern, warmth and architectural structure to a garden designed for slowing down.
Andrea used the breeze blocks to do much more than create a beautiful backdrop.
The screen gently divides the patio from the space beyond, giving the seating area the feeling of an outdoor room without closing it in. The open geometry maintains airflow, allows glimpses of greenery to filter through and provides a sense of privacy without the visual weight of a solid wall.
That balance is one of the reasons breeze blocks work so beautifully outdoors. They can define a space while preserving everything we want from being outside: fresh air, shifting light, movement and connection to the landscape.
The golden tone of the Sun blocks feels especially at home here. Against deep green foliage, pale terrazzo flooring and the soft neutral furniture, the color brings warmth without overpowering the garden. Trina Turk’s geometric pattern adds another layer, graphic enough to catch the eye but open enough to become part of the surrounding landscape.
A fringed umbrella, two Adirondack chairs and a low cocktail table complete the scene. Nothing feels overly arranged. The garden remains lush and slightly enveloping, giving the patio the feeling of a hidden retreat.
It is also a reminder that creating privacy does not necessarily mean building a barrier.
Here, the breeze block wall acts as architecture, ornament and landscape element all at once. It creates separation while still letting the space breathe.
The result is a backyard sanctuary that feels personal rather than precious, polished rather than formal, and designed around one very simple luxury: having a beautiful place to sit and do absolutely nothing.
