Cement Tiles - Frequently Asked Questions

About Cement Tiles

What are the origins and history of cement tiles?
Cement tiles have been used in architecture since the 1800s, valued for their durability and ability to carry pattern and color through the material itself. After a period of decline with the rise of mass-produced tile, they’ve seen a strong resurgence as designers return to materials that offer both craftsmanship and flexibility in design.

What are cement tiles made of?
Cement tiles are made from a mixture of cement, sand, marble powder, and natural mineral pigments. The design layer is created by pouring colored cement into a mold, then hydraulically pressing the tile. The color is not printed on the surface. It is part of the tile itself.

Who designs Tesselle cement tiles?
Our cement tile collections include Designer Exclusives by Trina Turk, Shag (Josh Agle), Jim Isermann, Karin Jeske, and Minty’s Design, along with classic and original patterns.

Are cement tiles durable?
Yes. Cement tiles are dense and long-lasting when properly installed and sealed. They have been used in residential and commercial spaces for over a century.

Are cement tiles slip resistant?
Our tiles are tested by an independent lab and meet standards for wet areas, making them suitable for bathrooms and other environments where slip resistance matters.

Do cement tiles vary in color?
Yes. Slight variation is part of the handmade process and gives cement tiles their character and depth.

How thick is the color layer?
The color layer is typically about 1/4” thick, allowing the tile to wear in over time rather than wear out.

Applications

Where can cement tiles be used?
Cement tiles can be used on floors, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and covered outdoor areas. In freeze-thaw climates, additional care and protection are required.

Can cement tiles be used outdoors?
Yes, in appropriate climates and applications. They perform well in covered outdoor areas and mild climates.

Installation & Maintenance

Do cement tiles need to be sealed?
Yes. Cement tiles are porous and must be sealed before and after installation. A penetrating sealer protects against stains and moisture.

What is involved in installation?
Cement tiles require careful handling and proper installation techniques. Tiles should be sealed before grouting, installed on a level surface, and finished with a final seal.
For detailed guidance, please review our installation and care instructions.

Do cement tiles require maintenance?
Cement tiles benefit from periodic resealing depending on use. Regular cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner will keep them looking their best.

Will cement tiles stain?
Because they are porous, unsealed tiles can absorb liquids. Proper sealing significantly reduces the risk of staining.
