Congratulations to Sir Roger Penrose, who was just awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics. Did you know that he was also a prolific designer of aperiodic tile patterns with discoveries such as the "dart and kite" tessellation that allows 2 modules, laid out randomly, to cover a plane with no gaps? This work was inspired by MC Escher, and related to his exploration in the field of quasicrystals. I love this photo, which was taken in the lobby of the Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M University, with a beautiful, random "Penrose Tile" installation on the floor.
