About Proposition 65
California Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that the State of California has identified as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Tesselle cement products are made primarily from mineral-based materials, including sand and cement. Our material composition includes silicon dioxide, commonly associated with silica. The primary potential for exposure occurs when dust is generated during installation, particularly when products are cut, drilled, ground, or otherwise modified.
For finished products that are simply being handled or are already installed, the principal installation-related dust exposure is not present.
Cutting, Handling and Installation
The most important precaution is to minimize exposure to airborne dust during installation.
When cutting, drilling, grinding, or otherwise modifying Tesselle cement products:
- Use a wet saw whenever possible to reduce airborne dust.
- Perform cutting and other dust-generating work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
- Wear an appropriate dust mask or respirator.
- Wear protective eyewear and gloves.
- Avoid breathing dust.
- Clean the work area thoroughly after installation and remove accumulated dust.
When mixing cement-based mortar, work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and follow the same precautions to minimize exposure to dust.
Exposure and First Aid
Inhalation
Avoid breathing dust. Move to fresh air if significant dust is inhaled. Seek medical attention if breathing difficulty or other symptoms develop.
Eye Contact
Avoid exposing eyes to dust. If dust enters the eyes, rinse cautiously with clean water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do, and continue rinsing. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
Skin Contact
Wear gloves when handling cementitious materials during installation. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If irritation or a rash develops, seek medical advice.
Ingestion
Do not eat, drink, or smoke while performing dust-generating installation work. If a significant amount of dust is swallowed, seek medical attention.
After Installation
Once Tesselle cement products are installed and no cutting, drilling, grinding, or other dust-generating activity is taking place, the primary dust-related exposure associated with installation is no longer present.
The mineral components remain part of the finished product, but normal installed use does not generate the same airborne dust created during cutting or other modification.
