Tesselle Breeze Blocks at Scripps: Circlet and Crater in a Coastal Landscape

Karin Jeske Breeze Blocks

We are excited to share a beautiful installation at the Center for Coastal Studies at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, submitted by Jeff Miller of Miller Hull Architects. This project features Tesselle’s Circlet and Crater Breeze Blocks, used in a fluid, sculptural layout that complements the surrounding coastal landscape.

Miller Hull’s work at Scripps often centers on openness, environmental responsiveness, and a connection to natural systems. This installation reflects those same ideas. The gently curving wall of breeze blocks brings in air, light, and movement, echoing the rhythms of the nearby ocean. The circular and cratered forms create a pattern that feels organic, almost geological, making it a natural fit for a campus dedicated to ocean and earth sciences.

Surrounded by volcanic rock, succulents, driftwood, and palms, the Tesselle blocks become part of a living landscape that celebrates the ecological story of the coast. The wall filters light, frames the sky, and softens the boundary between built space and nature, all while offering the durability needed for a coastal environment.

We are grateful to Jeff Miller and Miller Hull Architects for sharing this thoughtful installation. Projects like this show how Breeze Blocks can bring architecture, landscape, and environment together in a meaningful way.
