Opening a Wall Without Closing Off the Space with Breeze Blocks

Karin Jeske

At his Palm Springs home, customer David reimagined a solid masonry wall by opening it up with four columns of Verona Breeze Blocks. The result is a striking architectural moment that feels intentional, authentic, and perfectly suited to its mid-century surroundings.

Rather than replacing the wall entirely, David’s approach preserves the original character of the home while introducing rhythm, geometry, and depth. The breeze blocks create a bold visual statement while still allowing air flow and filtered light to reach the patio beyond.

As the sun shifts throughout the day and into evening, the pattern comes alive. Light washes through the openings, casting shadows that soften the hardscape and bring movement to the space. At the same time, the wall maintains privacy from the street, proving that openness and enclosure do not have to be at odds.

This project is a great example of how breeze blocks can be used thoughtfully. Not as decoration alone, but as an architectural tool that enhances comfort, function, and atmosphere.
