Designer Amber Lestrange's latest creation, the Hinton House, is a testament to her ability to blend modern aesthetics with vintage charm. Located in Woodland Hills, CA, this remarkable home is an oasis of mid-century modern style and contemporary luxury.
Elegant Division with Tesselle Orb Breeze Blocks
We're thrilled that one of the standout features of the Hinton House is the stunning Tesselle Orb White Breeze Block wall. This architectural element elegantly separates the living room from the hallway, maintaining an open feel while allowing natural light to filter through. The breeze blocks not only add a stylish statement but also enhance airflow, creating a serene and airy ambiance.
"Tesselle was the only breeze block company I could find that had an array of interesting shapes at a decent price point," says Amber. "Our breeze block wall is a fun design feature that also acts as a room divider while echoing the mid century tone of the home. I would love to integrate the same breeze block into a front courtyard to add to the curb appeal."
A Seamless Blend of Indoor and Outdoor Living
Amber’s vision for the Hinton House involved creating an open-plan living space that seamlessly blends with the outdoors. Upon entering, you're greeted by an impressive oversized glass entry door that flows into the living and dining areas. High vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, lined with skylights, and a double-sided stone fireplace add warmth and character to the space. The open floor plan allows for easy interaction between the kitchen and living areas, perfect for both everyday living and entertaining.
A Kitchen Designed for a Chef
The gourmet chef’s kitchen is a true highlight, featuring custom red oak cabinetry, Dekton countertops, and a 12-foot center island with a breakfast bar. Fisher & Paykel appliances, including a 6-burner range, column fridge, freezer, and drink fridge, make this kitchen as functional as it is beautiful. The use of concrete floors, designer light fixtures, and plastered walls throughout adds to the home's modern yet cozy feel.
Luxurious Bathrooms with a Spa-like Feel
The primary suite is a luxurious retreat, featuring a spa-like bathroom with a bidet, walk-in shower, and soaking tub adorned with custom Fireclay Tiles and Kohler fixtures. Each bathroom in the home showcases unique designs and high-end finishes.
Innovative Use of Space and Design
Amber’s design extends beyond the main living areas. The garage has been converted into an accesrory dwelling unit (ADU), adding valuable square footage and functionality. This space now includes a large bathroom and laundry room, painted in a vibrant blush terracotta color "Cassidy" from Portola Paints, adding a fun and vibrant touch.
Thoughtful Design Elements Throughout
Amber’s love for open-plan living is evident in her thoughtful design choices. The built-in linen couch, big wool mustard rug, and Roman Clay walls in the living room create a cozy yet spacious feel. The use of skylights as "light art" moments brightens up the entire space. In the dining area, earthy and minimal design elements are complemented by elegant touches, such as the boucle Arch Dining Chair from Sarah Ellison Studio.
Connecting Indoor Spaces with Nature
The bedrooms are designed to connect seamlessly with the outdoors. Andersen sliding doors in the master bedroom open to the yard, while Everhem drapes and Roman shades soften the edges and add a touch of luxury. The inclusion of a Japanese-inspired indoor tree brings a hint of Japandi style to the home.
A Showcase of Vintage and Modern Aesthetics
Amber’s knack for combining vintage and modern elements is showcased through her choice of art and decor. Vintage art pieces sourced from the Rose Bowl Flea Market add character, while contemporary touches elevate the space to new heights. The Hinton House is a perfect blend of 70s funk and wabi-sabi serenity.
